From the Pastor – Upcoming Events

Each week, I like to share a little what the Lord has been teaching me in relation to TVBC.  Maybe you can relate.

Hope this finds you well.  I wanted to take time this week to detail out some upcoming events–this Sunday and a Maple Corners project meeting for our church.

We do have a busy Sunday! Why so much on one Sunday? Partly due to the timing of families availability being able to come, partly due to church picnic on the calendar, and mostly to celebrate much in one day! We will be busy – but let’s pray God is glorified through it all.

Start time. Remember, we start at 10:20 AM (10 minutes earlier than usual) to recognize and dedicate our new babies and parents.  These include Warren Dennis (Wesley and Olivia Dennis) May Imbiri (Gilbert and Amber Imibiri), and Isaac Andrews (Matt and Rachel Andrews).

Why a baby dedication? Children are a gift from God. Psalm 127:3 says that “Sons are a heritage from the Lord, children a reward from Him.” As Christians, we’re called to identify that children belong first and foremost to the triune God. The dedication isn’t a special “force field” around the children, but a public recognition of the parents’ responsibility and our responsibility as the local church

Yet, in His amazing grace and goodness, the Lord gives children as gifts to parents. They not only have the remarkable responsibility of caring for this gift, but also the wonderful privilege of enjoying the gift (Deut. 6). Because children belong to God and are given by grace as gifts to parents, it is only proper and appropriate that children be dedicated back to God.

Baptism Sunday. We also have the privilege after the meet and greet time in the service to baptize Miranda. We believe baptism is an outward visible sign of God’s covenantal faithfulness to His people. It does not bestow salvation but represents the saving work of Christ in his death, burial, and resurrection (Colossians 2:11-12; Romans 6:4; Acts 10:47-48; 16:31-33).

Pray for Miranda and those without Christ this Sunday that the Gospel is clear.  And, as a believer, may you remember your baptism!

Guest Preacher.  Dr. Thomas P. Johnston, associate professor of evangelism at Midwestern Seminary down the road, will be our guest preacher.  He will be continuing our 10 Commandments series.

Dr. Johnston and I have done evangelism together since 2004.  He’s a true mentor to me and you will enjoy his humble, engaging and Gospel-centered sermon.

As many of you are aware, the city of KC has proposed a development (Maple Corners) behind our ball field to include a 90-unit townhome development slated to start in July or August of 2017 (pending several layers of yet-to-be-approved votes, etc.).  Since August, our church has hosted 2 community meetings on this subject.

This time, for our church attenders and members in particular, we’d like to invite you on Sunday, Oct. 30 at 5 PM to discuss the question: “As Christians and a local church, what is our duty with this project? If this goes through, how do we be a biblical neighbor? How do we handle this in a God-glorifying, Gospel-centered way?”

We’ll have a time of biblical examination, discussion, and prayer for our neighborhood and church.  Our focus will be the spiritual side of things and responsibilities. Hope you can make it!

It is a joy to serve at TVBC!

In Christ,
